Virginia Completes the Sweep of GW Baseball

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - George Washington baseball (0-3) was swept in their 2007 season-opening series against the seventh ranked University of Virginia (5-1), falling in the third and final game Monday afternoon at Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium by a final score of 15-2.
The Cavaliers, who outscored the Colonials 37-3 in the three games, are now 9-4 all time against GW.
In Monday's game, UVa pounded out 15 hits on their way to scoring 15 runs. Senior outfielder Brandon Marsh led the way for the `Hoos, going 3-for-5, including a home run, while recording five RBI and two runs.
Freshman LHP Matt Packer got the start for the Cavaliers and struck out nine batters while surrendering no runs in six innings of work.
GW scored their two runs in the top of the eighth with timely hitting. After freshman Chris Holland singled, sophomore Chris Marsicano drove him home with a double and then advanced to third on a throwing error by the UVa shortstop. Freshman Will Cooper grounded out to second to send Marsicano home for GW's second run of the game.
Senior Derek Haese struggled in his first start of the season, lasting just four innings while allowing eight hits and nine runs. However, only four of those runs were earned, as the Colonials committed four errors on the day.
Senior shortstop Michael Parker led GW with two hits. Parker was one of two Colonials, alone with freshman Curtis Eward, to record at least one hit in all three games.
GW baseball continues their schedule this week when they travel to James Madison University on Wednesday. The Colonials are set to face-off against the Dukes at 2:30 p.m. at Long Field/Mauck Stadium.
