CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - For the second straight day, the eighth ranked University of Virginia (4-1) recorded over 10 hits to down George Washington (0-2) by a final score of 11-1 Sunday afternoon at Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium.
The Cavaliers, who ended the day with 14 hits, including four doubles and two triples, were paced by sophomore shortstop Greg Miclat, who finished with five hits, two runs, two RBI and three stolen bases.
UVa once again jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. After singling to the right side, Miclat stole second base and then scored on right fielder Brandon Marsh's triple. The `Hoos would add two more runs to take a 3-0 lead into the second frame. That was all starting pitcher Jacob Thompson (2-0) would need. The right-handed sophomore surrendered just four hits and one run and struck out six in six innings of work.
The Colonials started junior RHP Brian Frazier (0-1). He gave up seven hits and three earned runs before being lifted with two outs in the fourth inning. A pair of freshmen made their collegiate debuts in relief work. Scott Swinson allowed just one run on three hits in 2.1 innings of work. Bobby Lucas pitched the eighth and final inning and yielded three runs.
For GW, their lone run came off the bat of junior left fielder Charlie Kruer, who sent a 3-1 pitch over the wall in right field for his first home run of the young season. Kruer led the team last season with nine home runs and 47 RBI.
The third and final game of the series is Monday at 3:00 p.m.
