Baseball Drops Season Opener at #8 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - George Washington University (0-1) managed just five hits and no runs in their 2007 season opener, falling 11-0 to the University of Virginia (3-1) at Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium late Saturday afternoon.
The Cavaliers, ranked eighth in the country, started LHP Sean Dolittle (2-0). The junior allowed just five hits and no runs in six strong innings of work. Pat Lehman (0-1), a sophomore, got the nod for GW. Lehman surrendered six runs on 12 hits in four innings of work.
The `Hoos took the lead early in the first inning when Dolittle helped his cause with an RBI-single through the left side. A sacrifice fly by sophomore David Adams made it 2-0 in favor of UVa and they never looked back. The fourth and sixth innings were the only frames that UVa came to the plate and did not tally a run.
Freshman Curtis Eward, starting at DH, recorded three of the five GW hits on the day. Senior shortstop Michael Parker and junior left fielder Charlie Kruer each added one hit apiece. Freshman Arllen Cruz made his collegiate debut by pitching the ninth inning.
The series continues on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. and then concludes at 3:00 p.m. on Monday. Sophomore RHP Jacob Thompson (1-0) will take to the bump for Virginia tomorrow and freshman LHP Matt Packer (0-0) will get the ball for the series finale. George Washington's starters have yet to be announced.
