WASHINGTON, DC - The Colonials made their 2006 home debut at Mount Vernon Athletic Field in impressive fashion, downing Howard 8-0 Wednesday afternoon. George Washington (4-1-0) finished the game with 30 shots - 17 on goal - and managed to hold the Bison to just four shots of their own.
Sophomore Meg Pyle began the scoring spree in the 6th minute when she corralled a pass from sophomore Kerry Philbin and beat the Howard keeper one-on-one. Pyle struck again less than seven minutes later for her third goal of season.
In the 15th minute, after receiving an assist from Dara Rosen, sophomore Stephanie Covello lofted a shot from the top of the box into the upper right corner of the net to make it 3-0 in favor of GW. The Colonials would add two more goals just before the half.
A pair of captains teamed up in the 42nd minute when senior Shari Taylor sent a high cross in front of the net that junior Nicole Trickett headed home for her first career goal. Shortly thereafter, freshman Brittany Eger took off on a breakaway and drilled the ball into bottom left corner for the first goal of her young career.
The second half began the same way the first forty-five minutes ended - with a Keara Mehlert assist. After already setting up Eger's goal, Mehlert assisted on Philbin's (1) goal in the 60th minute. Less than two minutes later, Covello (2) made it 7-0 on her second goal of the game. The final tally of the afternoon came when Eger stole the clearing pass from the Howard keeper and set up sophomore Ria Halkiotis (1) with a beautiful touch. All Halkiotis had to do was tap it across the goal line to make it 8-0, George Washington.
Head Coach Tanya Vogel was obviously excited about the offensive output, but she was most pleased with the way her team played together today.
"It's great how everyone on this team contributes. No matter who you put on the field, or where you put them, they get the job done," Vogel said. "The biggest thing for us today was our consistency. On both sides of the ball, we didn't let up, and that's what we're always looking for, a high level of consistent play."
The win over Howard (0-3-0) is GW's fourth shutout of the season. In just five games this year, the Colonials have already amassed 13 goals. By comparison, they managed just 15 goals in all of 2005. They are now 4-0-0 all time against the Bison of Howard.
George Washington will be back on the road for their next two games. This Sunday, they play at Georgetown at 4:00 p.m. They will travel to James Madison for a 7:00 p.m. game next Thursday.
