Women's Soccer Drops District Battle at Georgetown

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's soccer team failed to get going offensively and surrendered three second-half goals in a 3-0 loss at cross-town rival Georgetown on Sunday afternoon.
GW (4-2) battled the Hoyas to a scoreless tie at the intermission, due in large part to the play of sophomore goalkeeper Amie Kern and the Colonials' defense. Kern recorded four saves in the opening period, including a point-blank stop on Hoyas' midfielder Chrissy Skogen's shot from eight yards in the seventh minute. Kern also turned away a Skogen header in the 11th minute, pushing the shot into the crossbar where it was cleared by junior defender Kierra Colker.
The GW defense had its consecutive minutes without allowing a goal streak snapped at 319:17 when Georgetown defender Karen Waskewich launched a 45-yard, wind-aided free-kick over Kern and into the net in the 47th minute. Sarah Fetters beat Kern with a left-footed shot from 20 yards away just over seven minutes later to put the Colonials in a 2-0 hole. Shante Cofield added an insurance goal with 1:57 remaining to produce the final three-goal margin.
"The way Georgetown played defense made it very tough for our offense to get going," said head coach Tanya Vogel. "We tried to make adjustments at halftime, but didn't take advantage of them. Playing a game like this let us see our weaknesses and now we have to get ready for James Madison. I felt our midfield of Keara Mehlert, Nicole Trickett and Kerry Philbin was strong, it's just a matter of time before they score a game-winning goal for us."
Sophomore forward Meg Pyle led GW with two shots, while senior defender Shari Taylor posted the Colonials' lone shot on goal. Kern finished with five saves as GW was out-shot, 14-5, in the match.
George Washington will travel to Harrisonburg, VA, on Wednesday, September 14 to face James Madison. Kick-off is slated for 7:00 pm.
