Women's Soccer Defeats Morehead State at Nike Invitational

HUNTINGTON, WV - The George Washington University women's soccer team downed Morehead State early Sunday afternoon at the Second Annual Thundering Herd Nike Invitational, a four-team tournament played on the campus of Marshall University.
The Colonials (3-1-0), winners of both of their tournament games, scored the only goal of the match with just minutes remaining to secure the victory. Sophomore Keara Mehlert, set up with a beautiful touch from fellow-sophomore Stephanie Covello, was able to beat the Eagles' keeper for her first career goal. The loss dropped the Eagles 1-3-0 on the young season.
In addition to battling a tough Morehead State squad, GW also had to overcome a less-than ideal pitch. Sam Hood Field, still showing the effects of Ernesto's heavy rains earlier in the weekend, was reduced to a muddy playing surface.
"The field took some getting used to," said Head Coach Tanya Vogel. "But by the second half we had fully adjusted and I feel like it showed in our play."
As has been the standard to their early success this season, the Colonials were once again paced by a great defensive effort, led be senior Shari Taylor and red-shirt sophomore keeper Amie Kern, who recorded her third shutout this year.
Taylor and Kern were named to the All-Tournament Team, along with junior defender Kierra Colker and junior forward Jordan Sweeney. Colker was a centerpiece to the defense while Sweeney tallied both goals in the Marshall win.
"It's great to see some of our players get recognized for their play this weekend," said Vogel, "but both games were a total team effort."
The Colonials' game against the Eagles marked the first meeting between the two schools. Morehead State lost its opening match of the tournament on Friday night, falling 2-0 to Delaware. The host school Marshall, was scheduled to face the Blue Hens on Sunday afternoon.
After playing their first four matches this season on the road, George Washington is anxious to open their home schedule this week. "It will be great, to finally play a game at home. We're really excited," Vogel said.
The Colonials will take on Howard at 3:00PM on Wednesday at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.
