Softball Drops Twinbill at Longwood

FARMVILLE, VA - The George Washington University softball team dropped its second straight doubleheader on the road, this time a non-conference twinbill against Longwood at Lancer Field. The Colonials were edged, 5-4, in eight innings in the opener, followed by a 6-2 loss in the nightcap. Junior shortstop Elana Meyers (Douglasville, GA) provided the spark in GW's offense as she had four hits, including her fourth home run of the season, two runs, two RBI and two stolen bases in the doubleheader.
With the losses, the Colonials fall to 20-18 overall, while Longwood runs its record to 22-18 overall.
Holding a 3-1 lead through 5-1/2 innings in the opener, GW saw its two-run advantage evaporate in the bottom of the sixth courtesy of a two-run home run off the bat of catcher Pepper Wilson to knot the game at 3-3 and send it into extra innings.
In the eighth, sophomore Lisa Cohen (Langhorne, PA) gave the Colonials a one-run lead at 4-3 with an RBI single that scored junior Janelle Parker (Mount Vernon, NY), who was placed at second due to the international tiebreaker rule.
But the Lancers were not to be denied in the bottom half of the frame, as Wilson delivered an RBI double to tie the game and designated player Emily Radford singled home the winning run to end the game, 5-4.
GW took a 3-1 lead in the third as Meyers, freshman Maryanne Mohan (Portland, OR) and sophomore Katie Miller (Manteo, NC) each had RBI's in the frame.
Miller (6-3) suffered the loss as she allowed five runs, four earned, on nine hits in 7.1 innings. She also walked two and struck out two. Meyers finished 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while sophomore Chrysanthi Halkiotis (Brookeville, MD) and Miller each had two hits.
In the nightcap, Meyers led off the game with a solo shot to stake the Colonials to an early 1-0 advantage.
The lead would be short-lived, however, as Lancers centerfielder Caitlin Hooe led off the first with a solo home run of her own, an inside-the-park round tripper which was belted to deep center.
GW reclaimed the lead in the fourth when sophomore Jackie Yaniga (Miami, FL) delivered an RBI single to plate Miller, but a five-run fourth by the Lancers sealed the Colonials' fate. The inning began on a sour note as a throwing error by Meyers allowed two runs to score and Hooe, who finished 4-for-4 with three RBI, capped it off with a two-run single.
The Colonials used three pitchers in the contest, but freshman starter Kristin Gallant (Calabasas, CA) (2-2) was hit with the loss after allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits in 3.0 innings. Both Meyers and Yaniga had two hits and an RBI to lead the offense.
GW (20-18, 3-7 A-10) returns to action when it hosts Dayton in a conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 15, at 12 p.m. at Mount Vernon Field.
