ARLINGTON, VA - The George Washington University baseball team (6-19, 0-5 A-10) scored five times in the fourth inning and would open up an 8-2 lead after six innings, but the University of Rhode Island (14-5, 4-1 A-10) added a run in the seventh inning and six more in the eighth to defeat the Colonials 9-8 Saturday afternoon in an Atlantic 10 Conference game at Barcroft Park.
GW starter RHP Josh Wilkie (Alpharetta, GA / Chattahoochee) threw 7.0 solid innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts. He left after the seventh inning with the Colonials on top 8-3.
The GW bullpen was then knocked around in the top of the eighth for three hits, three walks, and a hit batsman while the defense committed one costly error that led to two runs and allowed the Rams to score six times and take a 9-8 advantage.
The Colonials' five-run fourth inning got going on catcher Andrew Abokhair's (Ashburn, VA / Broad Run) RBI single. Left fielder Mickey Shupin's (Sea Girt, NJ / Wall) subsequent double, and three Rams' errors, led to three more runs. An RBI single from designated hitter Jeremy Hall (Houston, TX / Magnolia) capped-off the inning and put GW on top 5-1.
One inning later, Abokhair slammed a two-run double that made the count 7-2 in GW's favor through six innings. Abokhair went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored and second baseman Bryan Hwang (Northvale, NJ / Northvale) went 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored in the game.
The Colonials increased their lead to 8-2 in the seventh inning when third baseman Tom Shanley (Stanfordville, NY / Pine Plains) knocked in a run with a base hit.
URI took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo home run from first baseman Ryan Cunningham (2).
Cunningham was one of four Rams to record two hits in the game.
Reliever RHP Adam Perkins (1-2) took over the pitching for the Rams in the fifth inning and finished the final five frames, allowing one run on two hits and struck out seven to earn the win.
GW reliever RHP Derek Haese (1-2) was responsible for URI's go-ahead run and suffered the loss.
The third and final game of the series is set for Sunday at 12:00 pm.
