Liberty Sticks GW Baseball With 12-8 Loss

ARLINGTON, VA - Liberty University (14-3) used 12 hits, three home runs and capitalized on four George Washington University (4-10) errors to defeat the Colonials, 12-8, and sweep the three-game series Sunday afternoon at Barcroft Park.
GW took a 3-2 lead after the first inning but the Flames scored three times in both the third and fourth inning to take an 8-3 lead that they would not relinquish.
For the second straight game LU homered three times as shortstop Patrick Gaillard (3), second baseman Michael Just (2) and designated hitter Abe Yeakel (1) each went long.
Left fielder Phillip Laurent went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI and for the series went 8-for-12 with one homer, two doubles and five RBI.
Left fielder Charlie Kruer (Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) homered for the Colonials (2) and went 4-for-4 in the game with a double and five RBI. Kruer batted .600 (6-for-10) for the series.
Freshman RHP Dane Beakler started for the Flames but lasted only 1.0 inning, allowing four earned runs. Reliever Tim John (2-0) came on in the second inning and allowed no runs and two hits in 3.0 innings to earn the win.
LU freshman Daniel Umberger threw the game's final three innings to record his first collegiate save.
Freshman RHP Tim Sexton (0-3) got the spot start for GW and struggled in his 2.2 innings of work, giving up five earned runs and five walks in the loss.
RHP Pat Lehman (Fairlawn, NJ / Fairlawn) threw 5.0 innings of relief for the Colonials and was effective, giving up two earned runs and struck out six.
GW is back in action on Wednesday when it heads to Williamsburg, VA, to face William and Mary. Game time is 3:00 pm.
