WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's basketball team knocked off Lake Truck Lines All-Stars, 70-63, in its lone exhibition game at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center on Friday night.
Senior Kenan Cole and junior Kimberly Beck, two of GW's four returning starters, combined for 40 of the Colonials' 70 points to pave the way to victory. Cole led all players with 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the floor, including a pair of three-pointers, and a 3-for-3 effort from the free throw line. Cole also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Beck provided her typical steady performance with 17 points, five assists and a game-high five steals. The duo shot 64 percent (16-of-25) from the field and connected on 5-of-6 three-point attempts.
GW took control from the onset, scoring the first 12 points of the game behind back-to-back triples by Cole. The hot-shooting Colonials built their largest lead of the night at 29-12 following a 10-0 run capped by a Sarah-Jo Lawrence jumper at the 6:20 mark of the opening period. Led by Cole and Beck, GW made half of its first 16 shots, including four of its first five three-pointers. However, Lake Truck rebounded after missing 16 of its first 20 shots and closed to within 12 at the half, 42-30.
The Colonials maintained their double-digit cushion throughout much of the second half, with Lake Truck threatening only in the waning minutes. Chelsea Grear hit two three-pointers to pull the LTL All-Stars to within six points, 67-61, with 37 seconds remaining, but two free throws by Cole and one by Lawrence sealed the win.
All 12 players who were dressed saw action, including newcomers Ivy Abiona (three points, two rebounds), Robin Murphy (two points), and Stefani Munro.
The two teams' combined for 46 turnovers in the early-season match-up, with the Colonials converting Lake Truck's 25 giveaways into 31 points. GW was out-rebounded, 47-33, but was barely out-scored in second-chance points, 15-12. The Colonials shot 42.9 percent on the night, versus 34.8 percent for Lake Truck.
Grear led the LTL All-Stars with 18 points and a game-high tying nine boards. Guard Nikki Blue, who plays for the WNBA's Washington Mystics, added 14 points and six assists. Brandi Teamer also reached double-digits with 10 points.
