GW Baseball Players Shine in Summer Ball

WASHINGTON, DC - Ten George Washington University baseball players represented the Colonials' program this summer in a number of leagues throughout the northeast. Among the players was right-handed pitcher Derrik Lutz (Grantville, PA/Lower Dauphin) who had a sensational campaign in the prestigious Cape Cod League.
Lutz was named to the Cape Cod All-League Team after allowing no runs, recording 39 strikeouts, walking three and yielding just 13 hits in 25.0 innings for the Chatham Athletics (West Chatham, MA) in the regular season. He also tied for the most saves in the league with 12.
A junior this season, Lutz posted a 1-0 record in the Cape Cod League playoffs and represented the East Division in the all-star game where he threw an inning of scoreless relief.
Lutz was named First Team All-Atlantic 10 Conference for the second straight year following GW's 2004 season. He went 8-0 as a starter in the regular season and held the league's third best ERA (2.30).
Right-hander Brian Frazier (Allentown, PA/Emmaus) led the Quakertown Blazers (Quakertown, PA) of the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League in wins (6), starts (8), shutouts (2), innings pitched (50.1) and batting-average-against (.202). He also stood second in the league in wins, one of which resulting from a one-hit shutout.
A sophomore this season, Frazier led the Blazers to the ACBL Championship with a playoff win where he threw 7.1 innings of shutout ball.
Juniors Derek Haese (Littleton, CO/Dakota Ridge/UC San Diego) and Mickey Shupin (Sea Girt, NJ/Wall) played together for the Silver Spring Takoma Thunderbolts (Takoma, MD) and red shirt freshman Gavin Swanson (Reisterstown, MD/Calvert Hall) played for Youse's Maryland Orioles (Linthicum, MD) - both teams affiliated with the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League.
Haese, a right-hand pitcher, appeared in seven games for the Thunderbolts, going 1-2 with a save and a 3.46 ERA in 13.0 innings.
Shupin, an infielder, started 39 games and led the league in runs (31) and was third in stolen bases (29).
Swanson batted .248 in 33 games for the Orioles and went on to hit a tournament best .517 (15-for-29) in the All-American Amateur Baseball Association National Championship (Johnstown, PA), leading his squad to the title.
Playing in the Clark Griffith League was senior Justin Prinstein (Farmington Hills, MI/North Farmington) and sophomores Charlie Kruer (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) and Andrew Abokhair (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run).
Prinstein, a right-handed pitcher, started six games and relieved in two for the Fairfax Nationals (Fairfax, VA). He posted an 0-3 record with 12 strikeouts in 30.0 innings.
Kruer also played for the Nationals, hitting .267 in six games before having his season cut short due to an injury.
Abokhair was twelfth in the league in hitting with a .298 average for the Herndon Braves (Herndon, VA). As catcher, he helped lead his club to the championship with the league's best fielding percentage (a perfect 1.000 pct. on 131 chances).
Rounding out the summer ball action for the Colonials was senior Dan Pfau (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and junior Michael Parker (Newton, MA/Newton South), who both played in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.
Pitching for the Torrington Twisters (Torrington, CT), Pfau went 1-2 in six appearances with a 4.94 ERA. The left-hander led his team with 32 strikeouts in 23.2 innings and held opponents to a .202 batting average.
Parker played for the Mill City All-Americans (Lowell, MA), hitting .252 in 38 games. The shortstop tied for sixth in the league in stolen bases (13) and was second on his team in slugging percentage (.338).
