Skavronskaia Leads Women's Tennis at DC Metro Championships

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington University senior Anastasia Skavronskaia (Miami, FL) won four consecutive matches to capture the Flight A singles championship at the 2005 DC Metropolitan Tennis Championships this past weekend, Sept. 23-25, presented by Georgetown. Also turning in solid performances for the Colonials were sophomores Kendall Swenson (Shaker Heights, OH) and Tracy Stecko (Lake Forest, IL), who teamed up to win the main draw consolation doubles bracket.
Skavronskaia, seeded second, won all four of her singles matches in straight sets, including victories over teammate Swenson in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-4, and a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over third-seeded Steph Cohen of Georgetown in the Flight A final. Swenson had won all three of her previous matches in straight sets before meeting Skavronskaia in the semifinals. Senior Sandra Simunic (Westerville, OH), meanwhile, made it to the semifinals of the consolation draw in Flight A, but fell just short of the final falling to American's Malvina De La Canal.
In Flight B singles, Stecko, who was seeded fourth, advanced to the semifinals, but fell to second-seeded Natalie Newman of Georgetown, 6-0, 6-2. Prior to reaching the semis and after a first round bye, Stecko notched wins over Towson's Jessica Woolfolk (6-1, 6-0) and Mount St. Mary's Kaitlin Hallahan (6-1, 6-0). GW freshman Madhuri Jha (Oak Brook, IL) was seeded third in Flight B, but lost her second-round match to Loyola's Christi Lazar in three sets, 6-0, 2-6, 10-8. Jha would bounce back and advanced to the final of the consolation draw after back-to-back straight set wins, but lost to Woolfolk, 6-4, 6-1.
Skavronskaia and Simunic were the top-seeded doubles team in the main draw and played like it advancing all the way to the final. But, an injury suffered by Simunic earlier on Sunday in singles play allowed George Mason's second-seeded duo of Andrea Fusea and Maricel Ballester to win the title by default.
The Colonials' tandem of Swenson and Stecko fell to Fusea and Ballester in the first round of the doubles main draw, but the pair won three straight matches on the consolation side, including an 8-3 victory over Julia Colarusso and Merissa Hollinger of American in the final, to claim the consolation crown.
GW returns to action when it competes at the Georgetown Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1-2.
