WASHINGTON, DC --- George Washington's ace pitcher Greg Conden (Owego, NY/Owego Free Academy) has been named the Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week, the conference has announced. Conden who pitched a complete game win against Sacred Heart on Saturday, is now tied for the all-time wins record at GW with 30.
Conden (2-0) has now started a GW record 49 games passing pitching coach Dennis Healy (George Washington '96) in the first week of the season. Saturday's 3-2 win over Sacred Heart was his ninth career complete game and 30th victory. He is now tied with GW pitching great Hank Bunnell (1968-1971) for the most career wins, tying a 32-year old GW record.
Conden had an impressive outing against Sacred Heart, for his second win of the season. He pitched seven innings giving up two runs on six hits and now has an ERA of 2.25 this year. He fanned seven and has yet to issue a walk this season.
Earlier in the year, Conden recorded the win over Maryland at the Stetson Invitational Tournament in DeLand, FL. In five innings of work, he gave up five hits and one earned run while striking out six en route to a 11-3 win.
The Colonials have jumped out to 3-1 start this season including an 11-inning upset of No. 18 Stetson. The club plays previously ranked JMU today at 4:00 p.m. at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, VA. The Colonials will then embark on road trip to Atlanta for a weekend series against No. 1 Georgia Tech.
