Four Colonials Honored by ABCA and Rawlings

WASHINGTON, DC - Four George Washington baseball players have been named to the 2002 All-East Region Division I Teams the American Baseball Coaches Association/RAWLINGS All-America Selection Committee has announced. Senior outfielder Mike Bassett (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) was named to the first team, while senior third baseman Matt Krimmel (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland), junior starting pitcher Greg Conden (Owego, NY/Owego) and freshman relief pitcher Justin Orenduff (Chesapeake, VA/Western Branch) were named to the second team.
Bassett finished the year batting .382 in 63 games. He had 92 hits including 19 homers, 60 runs, and 77 RBIs. His outstanding play this season enabled him to break several GW career records, including home runs (62), RBIs (254), total bases (535), hits (290), runs (198), at-bats (846), and games (231). Bassett was named to the Atlantic 10 Baseball All-Conference first team, to the Atlantic 10 All-Championship Team, and to the NCAA All-Regional Team. He also was named A-10 Player of the Week three times this season, as well as Most Outstanding Player of the A-10 Championship and GW Baseball's MVP. Bassett was drafted in the 11th round by the Cincinnati Reds on June 4 in the 2002 Major League Baseball free agent draft. He is now playing for the Billings (MT) Mustangs (Pioneer Rookie League).
Krimmel batted .344 this season, playing 63 games, primarily at third base. He homered 13 times, collected 65 RBIs and led the team with 23 doubles to earn the GW single-season record for doubles. Krimmel was once named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week and NCBWA National Hitter of the Week, while being named to the Atlantic 10 Baseball All-Conference second team. Drafted by the Reds in the 36th round on June 5 in the 2002 Major League Baseball free agent draft, he has joined Bassett on the Billings Mustangs.
Conden broke the GW individual season record for victories set in 1979 with his 11-3 season record. He ranks second on the GW all-time victories list with 28 and is tied with GW assistant coach Dennis Healy for first in career starts with 47. This season he appeared in 18 games, leading the team with 16 starts, 96.0 innings pitched and hurling four complete games. The righthander's ERA was 4.22, while striking out 69 batters, walking 41, allowing 45 earned runs and 93 hits, and holding opponents to a .252 batting average. The Atlantic 10 recognized Conden as Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week once this season, while he was also named to the Atlantic 10 Baseball All-Conference second team.
Orenduff concluded his superb freshman season with a final record of 10-2, collecting three relief victories earned in the Atlantic 10 Tournament. The righthander appeared in 28 games, leading the team with a 1.68 ERA and 78 strikeouts in 59 innings. He walked just 19 batters and held opponents to a .181 batting average. Orenduff was recognized once this season as Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week and was named to the Atlantic 10 Baseball All-Championship Team and to the 2002 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Team.
