Colonials Baseball Team Captains Named For 2003

WASHINGTON, DC - The Atlantic 10 Tournament Champion Colonials are getting in gear for another run at the crown in 2003. Head Coach Tom Walter has announced that three captains will lead the Colonials for next season's campaign. The tri-captains are senior Chris Barry (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius), senior Tony Dokoupil (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park), and junior Jeff Fertitta (Baltimore, MD/Loyola Blakefield). Barry was a captain of last year's tournament champions and hopes to lead the Colonials to similar success in 2003.
Chris Barry begins his second year as a captain after starting all but six of the Colonials 65 games last year. He was second on the team in stolen bases with 18 and had the fourth most at bats with 219. Barry combined power with speed launching seven home runs while collecting 87 total bases on 59 hits.
Senior Outfielder Tony Dokoupil played in 47 games last year of which he started 40. He tied for the team lead in sacrifice flies with five and tied for second in sacrifice bunts with five. Dokoupil is currently 11th on the Colonials' all-time stolen bases list with 38. He made only two errors last year in left field out of 76 chances. Dokoupil was named to the Verizon Academic District II Baseball Team in 2002.
Junior Jeff Fertitta has been an impact player for the Colonials and started 59 of the clubs 65 games splitting time between catcher and first base. he is the returning player with the highest batting average at .328. Fertitta's 12 home runs tied him for third last year while he was fourth in hits (67), RBI (46), and total bases (114). Fertitta was named to the A-10 Baseball All-Championship Team for his performance in last year's tournament.
The Colonials, who went to the NCAA Tournament last year for the first time in 10 years will open their 2003 campaign at Norfolk State at 1:00 pm on February 11, 2003.
