GW Baseball Inks Three Players in Early Signing Period

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington Baseball team received commitments from three players during the early signing period announced head coach Tom Walter. Pitcher Derrik Lutz from Hummelstown, PA, infielder Michael Parker from Newton, MA and pitcher/infielder Anthony Smith of Cross River, NY will make up one-half of this year's recruiting class.
"We are extremely pleased with the three early commitments," stated Walter. "All three will have a major impact on our program for years to come."
Lutz is a right-handed pitcher who brings much needed power to the staff. He currently throws between 88-91 mph, with good command of his breaking pitches and change-up. According to recruiting coordinator Dennis Healy, as Lutz matures, there is no telling how good his stuff can become.
Parker is a switch-hitting middle infielder who will give the Colonials' coaching staff a lot of flexibility. His strengths are as a fielder, but he does have the ability to hit for a high average, and as he develops, could add some power to the line-up. Healy adds, "Parker is an 'old school' type of player who goes hard the entire game and plays the right way."
Smith is a versatile player who is an outstanding left-handed pitcher and can also play first base and outfield. He is the first two-way player for GW in some time and will also give the coaches some flexibility. Smith is also excellent at the plate where Healy predicts that his left-handed bat will be a mainstay in the middle of the lineup for years.
The Colonials open their baseball season on February 11, 2003 at Norfolk State.
