Colonials Escape Spiders' Web, 88-87

WASHINGTON, DC (Jan. 27) - The George Washington women's basketball team forced the Spiders into three-straight turnovers with 25 seconds remaining and converted them into five points to take their only lead with 4 seconds on the clock and top the visiting Richmond Spiders 88-87.
The Colonials trailed the entire game as the Spiders were on fire, shooting .558 (29-52) from the field. The game seemed decided with 47 seconds on the clock as GW was down eight points to UR.
A three-point play from freshman guard Greeba Outen Barlow sliced the lead down to five, and the Colonials fouled Richmond's Krysten Gull immediately. Gull would make one of two and up the Spiders' lead back to six points with 36 seconds left in the game.
Freshman Anna Monta?ana converted a layup off a missed jumper to pull GW within four with 26 seconds left. Sophomore guard Marsheik Witherspoon then stole the ensuing inbound pass, which Outen Barlow passed to junior guard Lindsey Davidson who converted the layup to narrow the margin to two points, 85-87.
The Colonials called a timeout, and set their defense for UR's inbound play. Monta?ana stole the inbound pass and passed it to Davidson who made the quick pass to Witherspoon for the another two points, tying the game at 87-87 with 13 seconds remaining.
Junior Cathy Joens would make another steal on the next inbound play and Monta?ana grabbed an offensive rebound off a shot by Outen Barlow. The Spanish forward missed the first free throw, but was able to convert the second to give GW their first lead of the game at 88-87.
The Spiders inbounded the ball but were pressured by the Colonials in the backcourt. Gull, who led UR in scoring with 22 points including hitting 4-10 from beyond the arc, threw up a half court desperation shot with time expiring that would fall well short as GW escaped with the one-pint victory.
GW (13-6, 8-0) extended their season-high winning streak to eight games, and remained undefeated in the Atlantic 10 conference with the win. The Colonials, who had five players in double figures, were led by Joens and sophomore center Ugo Oha who each tallied 18 points on the game. Joens also dished out a team-high seven assists on the game. Junior forward Erica Lawrence scored 14 points with Davidson and Monta?ana adding 13 and 10 points respectively.
In addition to Gull, UR (9-12, 3-5), was led by Amber Goppert who threw in 20 points. Ebony Tanner scored 14 points and Kate Flavin added 10 in the losing effort.
The Colonials head to Olean, NY to face the St. Bonaventure on Feb. 1, at 7:00 p.m.
