Women's Basketball Bests Bonnies, 63-60

ST. BONAVENTURE (Feb. 1, 2002) - The Colonials remained undefeated in Atlantic 10 play, winning their ninth straight, as GW held off a second-half charge by the St. Bonaventure Bonnies.
The Colonials (14-6, 9-0) swept the competition in January, posting an 8-0 record in the Atlantic 10 conference. On Friday, GW sought to continue the trend in February.
SBU has been the surprise of the conference, entering the game with a 12-7 record overall, and a 6-2 conference mark. The Bonnies have been especially tough at home with an 8-1 record, only losing their home opener versus Vermont on Nov. 16.
The Bonnies took the early lead behind a long-distance attack from beyond the arc. SBU was hot from three-point land, hitting four trifectas in the first 10 minutes to hold a six-point lead, 19-13 at the 10:35 mark.
The Colonials, or more specifically junior Cathy Joens, then went on an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to take the lead 21-19 with 7:12 remaining in the half. Joens made two free throws, then two three-point shots to complete the run and help GW take the lead. The Colonials would extend their advantage to eight points before the break, when Joens hit her third three of the half to give GW a 36-28 halftime lead.
In the second half GW came out firing, pulling away from SBU with a 10-5 run over the first four minutes to take a game-high 14-point lead at 16:55. The Bonnies then showed why they were 8-1 at home entering the game, clawing back from the 14-point deficit with a 20-6 run to tie the game, 52-52 with 6:49 remaining in the game.
The Bonnies took a 55-52 lead with 5:39 on the clock when Joens orchestrated another mini-run of her own, scoring six-straight points to give the Colonials the lead. Joens converted a three-point play after being fouled on a made layup to pull GW even with SBU 55-55. The junior guard then hit her fourth three-pointer of the game to help the Colonials take the 58-55 advantage with 2:25 on the clock.
The Bonnies tied the game yet again 60-60 with 54 seconds remaining in the game, but a layup by junior Erica Lawrence and a free throw by Joens gave the Colonials the lead for good.
Joens scored a career-high 27 points on 8-18 shooting, going 4-6 from beyond the arc. She also collected eight rebounds and dealt out three assists. Junior Lindsey Davidson and sophomore Ugo Oha also scored in double figures for GW with 10 point apiece.
The Colonials travel to Philadelphia to face La Salle on Sunday, Feb. 3, in a 1:00 p.m. game.
