Baseball Splits With Morehead State
MOREHEAD, KY. (May 11, 2001) - Sophomore Greg Conden (Owego, NY/ Owego Free Academy) pitched six innings of one run ball in game one to help the Colonials earn a split of a doubleheader with the Morehead State Eagles, this afternoon, May 11, at Allen Field in Morehead, KY. The Colonials won game one, 8-2, while the Eagles took game two, 11-6. The Colonials end the regular season with an overall record of 35-21.
In game one, the Colonials jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second courtesy of an RBI fielder's choice by senior Ross Smirne (Fleetville, PA/ Lackawanna Trail) and a Morehead State error.
Sophomore Chris Barry (Orchard Park, NY/ Canisius) stole home in the fourth to push the lead to 3-0. In the sixth, senior Tony Brown (Hockessin, DE/ A.I.DuPont) hit a three-run home run to make it 6-0. Junior Mike Bassett (Paramus, NJ/ Paramus) and sophomore Jake Wald (Alexandria, VA/ T.C. Williams) hit solo home runs in the eighth and ninth, respectively, to complete the scoring for GW.
The eight runs were more than enough for Conden, who won for the seventh time in eight starts to push his record to 8-4 on the season.
In game two, the Eagles took an early lead off of GW starter Jason Baker (Accokeek, MD/ DeMatha). Center fielder Casey Gilvin led off the bottom of the first with a single and came around to score on a home run by third baseman Kevin Matuszek.
GW cameback to take the lead in the third. Sophomore Tony Dokoupil (Severna Park, MD/ Severna Park) homered to cut the lead to 2-1. After a single by junior Matt Krimmel (Schnecksville, PA/ Parkland) and a walk to senior Dan Rouhier (McLean, VA/ St. Alban's), Barry doubled to left center to give the Colonials a 3-2 lead.
The Eagles tied the game with a run in the third, but the Colonials regained the lead with two runs of their own in the fourth. A Dokoupil single and a double by Krimmel gave GW a 5-3 lead.
However, the Eagles exploded for eight runs in the fourth to take a commanding 11-5 lead. All of the runs, including a grand slam by shortstop David Hughes, came off of Baker, who allowed 11 runs on ten hits in only three and a third innings.
With the regular season completed, the Colonials now turn their attention to Philadelphia where Temple is playing host to St. Bonaventure. The Owls and Bonnies split a doubleheader this afternoon with the Owls winning game one, 2-0, and the Bonnies taking game two, 8-7. In order for the Colonials to qualify for their second straight Atlantic 10 tournament, they need the Owls to defeat the Bonnies tomorrow afternoon.
