GW women's basketball legend Taj Abraham will serve as head coach of the Virgin Islands Women's National Team in the upcoming FIBA AmeriCup Centrobasket Qualifiers.
Taking place from July 12-18, the event will feature eight national teams from Central America and the Caribbean Basketball Confederation. The Virgin Islands will play three group stage games from July 12-15, with the knockout round set to begin on July 16th. Included on their schedule are matchups against Puerto Rico (July 12), El Salvador (July 13) and Guyana (July 15). The field also consists of a second group, which includes the Dominican Republic, Bahamas, Mexico and host Nicaragua.
At the event's conclusion, the top three teams will qualify for the 2027 FIBA Women's AmeriCup, joining El Salvador, who received automatic qualification as the tournament's host.
GW's all-time leading scorer, Abraham became the first player in program history to have her jersey number retired last year. Her No. 40 was raised to the Smith Center rafters on Feb. 14, forever cementing her as a legend in Foggy Bottom. Abraham is the lone member of the program to eclipse 2,000 career points, and was an All-America selection following the 1996-97 season, the same year she helped lead the program to its lone appearance in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.
Drafted 31st overall in the 1997 WNBA Draft by the Sacramento Monarchs, Abraham played two seasons in the W, one with Sacramento (1997) and one with Detroit (1998). Abraham was inducted into the GW Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004, while her 1996-97 team was enshrined in 2019. Abraham has amassed over 20 years of Division I coaching experience, including serving as Radford's head coach from 2008-13.
