Ashley Corpuz breaks the GW program record for career walks
GW softball clinched its second-straight A-10 series win on Sunday as the Revolutionaries pulled out a 9-7 win vs. George Mason at the GW Softball Field. The Revolutionaries improved to 13-9 overall with a 4-2 mark in-conference after two A-10 series.Â
Sunday's finale featured seven ties and lead changes, which started early as Kaylee Layfield wasted little time and launched a solo-home run in the bottom of the first.
The Patriots countered in the third as after GW doubled its lead on a sac fly in the second, George Mason came back and tied the game at two before taking a 4-2 lead in the third.
The Patriots tacked on a fifth run in the top of the fourth, but GW had an answer and tied the game with three runs of its own in the bottom of the frame. The Revolutionaries had four hits and a walk in the fourth, passing the bat to Cadence Gilliland who knocked in two runs on a single, and then to Sydney Hogue who tied the contest at 5-5 on an RBI single.
Defensive miscues helped George Mason retake the lead at 7-5, but GW punched back as both Ashley Corpuz and Cece Smith launched two-run home runs in the fifth, tying the game at 7-7 on Corpuz's swing before taking a 9-7 lead on Smith's blast.
Smith's home run ended as the game-winning hit, sealing her fifth win of the season as she was also GW's starter. Smith pitched a complete game with four strikeouts, and she was only charged with two earned runs.
It took four George Mason four pitchers to try to counter GW's offense on Sunday, none of whom lasted longer than 2.0 innings.
GW had 13 hits, reaching double-figures for the third time in the last four games. All ten GW players had at-least one hit, led by Gilliland, Smith and Daniella Lew with two apiece.Â
Corpuz was 1-2 with a home run, sac fly and a record-breaking walk, the 123rd of her career, which is now more walks than anyone else in GW softball history.Â
After Sunday's games, GW is in a three-way tie for second in the A-10, trailing Loyola Chicago (11-14, 3-0 A-10) in first.
The Revolutionaries hit the road for four games this week. GW will make the short trip to College Park, Md. on Wednesday for a midweek matchup at Maryland (6:00 p.m.), before heading to Dayton this weekend for a three-game set vs. the Flyers Saturday (12:00 p.m. doubleheader) and Sunday (12:00 p.m.).Â
