WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball is back in the friendly confines of the Smith Center this week, opening up with a Tuesday night date with Rhode Island. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. with coverage on ESPN+ and Monumental Sports Network.
Tuesday is George's Birthday celebration with free Papa Johns pizza slices for the first 1,500 fans in attendance. Fans are encouraged to allow extra time arriving at Smith Center due to anticipated rolling road closures in the Foggy Bottom area related to the Walk for Peace. More information is available here.
TRIPLE-DOUBLE IN THE HISTORY BOOKS
Jean Aranguren recorded just the second triple-double in program history on Saturday at Duquesne, joining Carl Elliott's effort in 2007 vs. Temple. Aranguren tallied 18 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in the effort, doing most of his damage in the second half with all 18 of his points, seven rebounds and four assists coming after halftime.
The feat was the first in nearly five years for an A-10 player since St. Joe's Jordan Hall did so against La Salle on Feb. 20, 2021. The 10 rebounds matched a season-high for Aranguren while the 10 assists also equaled a career-high.
THE BUG KEEPS BITING
Rafael Castro's foot injury, considered day-to-day, as well as Bubu Benjamin's absence Saturday left GW down to seven scholarship players against the Dukes. Castro's absence has been noticeable on both ends as GW is averaging just 74.7 ppg and shooting 39.8% over the last three compared to 81.6 ppg and 46.6% in the first eight A-10 games.
Defensively, opponents have scored 81.0 ppg and shot 48.6% overall over the last three compared to 73.3 ppg and 44.0% in the prior eight games with Castro in the lineup.
GW has only had three players appear in all 24 games this season - Jean Aranguren, Tre Dinkins and Luke Hunger - and no one has started all 23. The Buff & Blue have had 22 games missed due to injury from its 10-man rotation.
A LOOK AT THE RAMS
Rhode Island is a part of the crowded middle in the A-10 standings with a 5-5 mark following an 82-77 win over Richmond on Saturday. The Rams have won four of their last five games, and five of seven, after starting A-10 play 0-3.
Tyler Cochran is the reigning A-10 Player of the Week after recording a monster double-double of 34 points and 10 rebounds in Saturday's win over Richmond. Cochran has scored double figures in seven straight games, averaging 19.9 ppg over the stretch, and ranks fifth in the league with 17.1 ppg scored against conference opponents. He also leads the A-10 with 3.0 steals per game.
Rhode Island possesses a top-50 scoring defense (68.1 ppg) and forces the second-most turnovers (14.3) in the A-10 by virtue of tallying 8.9 steals per game, 33rd nationally.
