Men's Basketball Storms Back Only to Fall Late at Saint Joseph's, 76-73

PHILADELPHIA - Faced with yet another one-possession contest in the final minutes of A-10 play, GW men's basketball once again saw an all-too-familiar script go the way of its opponent, falling to Saint Joseph's, 76-73, on Tuesday evening at Hagan Arena.
George Washington overcame its second-lowest shooting percentage of the season to dig out of a 14-point hole in the first half, roaring back via a 20-6 run across halftime to take a lead that swelled to as large as 48-43 with 13 minutes remaining.
The host Hawks calmly countered with a 21-7 run to reestablish a nine-point lead with less than four minutes to go. However, GW, which attempted a school record 45 3-pointers, made four in a row to get within one, 71-70, with 1:19 remaining.
GW got a stop on the ensuing possession, but turned the ball over with a chance to take the lead and then fouled Derek Simpson shooting a 3-pointer with 20 seconds left and never had another opportunity to tie or take the lead.
The three-point setback was the sixth of the season by two possessions or less, including four of the six losses in conference play.
Playing once again without leading scorer Rafael Castro, GW got contributions from all eight of its healthy scholarship players with Trey Autry's 15 points leading the way. Garrett Johnson had 13 while Luke Hunger (11 points, nine rebounds) and Jean Aranguren (11 points, nine rebounds, four assists, three steals) narrowly missed double-doubles.
GW made 15 3-pointers, but shot just 35.8% from the floor, while St. Joe's connected at a 49.1% clip, and was led by Jaiden Glover-Toscano's 23 points on just nine field goal attempts.
The Buff & Blue will look to snap their three-game skid on Saturday, heading to Western Pennsylvania for its lone matchup of the year with Duquesne. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m. with coverage on ESPN+.
