Men's Basketball Turned Over at Dayton, 79-72
1/6/2026 10:47:00 PM | Men's Basketball
DAYTON, Ohio - GW men's basketball took the court at UD Arena on Tuesday night looking for their first win at the storied venue in 21 years. The experienced Revolutionaries controlled most of the first 20 minutes, but Dayton surged ahead early in the second half and held off any and all charges to pull out a 79-72 victory.
The story of the day for GW, unfortunately, was 22 turnovers that led to 31 points for the Flyers and provided enough cushion for the home side to eke out the win.
The critical sequence came with eight minutes left in the second half when GW, still only down by one, missed a pair of free throws, and a second-chance 3-pointer on the other end spurred a 7-0 Dayton run to open up their largest lead of the game to that point.
Tre Dinkins, who finished with a season-high 24 points, did his best to keep GW in it, drilling five 3-pointers, including multiple from the logo, and led a 6-0 run to bring the Buff & Blue within a possession with two minutes left. But fouls on the next three defensive possessions led to six Dayton free throws while GW missed a pair of interior shots to essentially finish things off.
Dinkins led a bench-heavy effort for GW that saw all three double-figure scorers come from the reserves. Garrett Johnson tallied 14 points and Tyrone Marshall added 11 points and six rebounds.
GW's starting five was limited to 21 total points as reigning A-10 and National Player of the Week Rafael Castro was held to eight points on 3-of-5 shooting.
Dayton was led by Javon Bennett's 20 points on 4-of-20 shooting and the Flyers put five in double figures in total. The two teams are scheduled to meet again on a #FridA10 ESPN broadcast at the Smith Center on Feb. 27.
Next up for the Revolutionaires is a two-game homestand that starts Saturday with a visit from Loyola Chicago. Tip is scheduled for 3 p.m. with coverage on CBS Sports Network.
