WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball is set to square off with one of the other four A-10 unbeatens as it visits UD Arena to battle the Flyers on Tuesday night at 8 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
CASTRO NAMED A-10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Rafael Castro earned his first outright A-10 Player of the Week award on Monday (second overall) by showing his Conference Player of the Year capability, averaging 26.5 ppg, 10.0 rpg, 3.0 spg and 2.5 bpg while shooting 77.8% in the first two conference games.
Castro became the first player in the country this season to tally at least 26 points, 14 rebounds, four blocks and three steals in a game, the first to do so overall since Yaxel Landeborg (with UAB) last year and the first A-10 player to do so since 2005. In 20 career regular season games against A-10 teams, Castro has averaged 17.4 ppg, 9.6 rpg, 2.1 apg, 1.5 bpg and 1.3 spg while shooting 68.0% (132/194) from the floor.
LET'S GET EFFICIENT
George Washington currently ranks 29th in KenPom's adjusted offensive efficiency, the highest overall efficiency (120.9) for any Atlantic 10 team in the website's era (since 1997) and the highest ranking for GW since finishing 29th in 2015-16.
GW is the only team in the country to have two players in the top 20 in KenPom's "True Shooting" Percentage in Trey Autry (10th) and Rafael Castro (18th). Autry (17th) and Castro (19th) are also both in the top 20 in effective field goal percentage with GW joining Iowa State as the only team to boast two players in the top 20 of the metric.
A LOOK AT THE FLYERS
Dayton has assumed its normal spot near the top of the A-10 with wins over Fordham (63-56) and Loyola Chicago (70-68) in the conference's first week of play. The Flyers also boast a pair of non-conference overtime wins over Big East foes Marquette and Georgetown and are 8-1 at home with the lone blemish coming to Liberty.
Javon Bennett paces UD with 16.6 ppg (t-3rd in the A-10) and is coming off a 20-point showing Saturday at Loyola that included the game-winning basket in the waning seconds. De'Shayne Montgomery adds 15.1 ppg and starting center Amael L'Etang provides 12.8 ppg and 6.5 rpg, but has missed the last two games due to injury.
Dayton has been the A-10's best at forcing turnovers with 16.5 per game, 11th nationally. UD's 9.7 steals per game are 24th nationally, resulting in a +5.4 turnover margin that is eighth in the NCAA.
