
Volleyball Splits Day No. 1 of Dig The District

WASHINGTON-Â The GW volleyball team split the opening day of Dig The District, cruising to victory over NC Central in the matinee before falling to the Temple Owls in the evening matchup in the Smith Center.Â

Friday's matinee was a quick effort on behalf of the home team, rattling off straight sets to defeat the Eagles and give the Buff & Blue its first victory of 2025.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
·      Coming from a five-point deficit in the opening frame, the Revolutionaries rattled off straight points to take a seven-point lead over NC Central. The remainder of the set proved to be narrow, but the Buff & Blue walked away with a 25-22 victory.Â
·      Behind 19 team kills in the second, the Buff & Blue led by as much as 10 in the middle stanza, eventually defeating the Eagles 25-17.Â
·      In the matinee's final frame, GW jumped out to a quick lead, and while the Eagles moved to battle back late in the set, the Buff & Blue prevailed, claiming the match at 25-14.Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:Â
·      The attack was once again dominated by sophomore pin hitters Taylor Treahy who put down 12 kills and Alexis Rodriguez who amassed 11.Â
·      Dilara Elmacıoğlu rattled off 36 assists at starting setter.
·      At the net, Sydney Hasenfratz dominated with four blocks and five kills.
·      In the back row, Penelope Hiepler and Lydia Zeng chipped in 10 digs apiece.Â
·      Ava Webster made her collegiate debut, putting down two kills at the pin.Â
·      At the service line, five student-athletes combined for nine service aces.Â
·      As a team, the offense hit above .300 in both the second (.381) and third (.343) sets.Â
GW vs. Temple
In the second matchup of Friday's doubleheader, the Revolutionaries won the opening frame against Temple, but ultimately fell, 3-1 to the Owls.Â
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
·      The Buff & Blue came out to a strong start against the Owls, putting down 13 team kills to claim a 25-21 set victory.Â
·      Temple fought back starting in the second stanza, rattling off three straight set victories to claim the match, 3-1.Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:Â
·      Cayla Cogan led GW's offense through the second matchup, swinging for 14 kills and chipping in four blocks to lead the team at the net.Â
·      Setters Dilara ElmacıoÄźlu and Abby Markworth combined for 35 assists.Â
·      Penelope Hiepler led GW's back row with 14 kills on the night.Â
Tomorrow, GW is back in action at 4 p.m., taking on the Georgetown Hoyas in the first of the Monumental Matchup series. Admission is free of charge for all fans, and the match will air live on ESPN+.Â
