WASHINGTON - GW Softball Head Coach Matt Klampert has announced the completion of his inaugural staff, welcoming GW All-American Sierra Lange and recent Maryland standout Sam Bean as assistant coaches ahead of the 2026 season.
"I am very excited to add Sierra and Sam to our coaching staff," said Klampert. "Their natural ability for connection is a big reason why I know they will have immediate success at GW. The most important piece for me in the search process was finding the right people that could help enhance the student-athlete experience and culture of the program, and I believe we did just that with these additions."
Lange, one of the most decorated softball student-athletes in GW history, returns to her alma mater after a two-year stint as an assistant coach at Yale. In her playing career for the Buff & Blue, Lange was a two-way sensation, setting numerous GW batting and pitching records, and becoming just the second Buff & Blue softball All-American in program history.
"I'm incredibly excited and grateful for the opportunity to return to GW," said Lange. "My experience here was truly special, and I can't wait to share my passion for this University and this sport with our student-athletes. I'm thrilled to be part of the staff and to work alongside such driven, like-minded individuals."
Lange spent six years in the Buff & Blue, but missed the 2020 shortened COVID year due to injury. During her career, she was twice named the A-10 Pitcher of the Year (2021, 2022), was placed on the A-10 All-Conference First Team three times (2019, 2021, 2022), and was named to the A-10 All-Rookie Team as a first-year (2018).
"It is a tremendous honor to bring one of the most decorated student-athletes in GW softball history back home," Klampert said. "Having the opportunity to coach against Sierra for three of her four competitive seasons, you could see the competitive fire that led to her on-field success. She has used that same mentality at the beginning of her coaching career to raise the level of her student-athletes."
Lange owns nearly every GW career pitching record, including wins (94), strikeouts (785), and shutouts (18). Lange has the second most hits in program history (241), which includes a single-season best of 85 hits in 2019. Lange posted a career 2.54 ERA, and offensively, she hit for a career .377 mark with a 1.016 OPS.
In her two seasons as an assistant coach at Yale, Lange helped produce seven All-Ivy selections, which included a pair of First Team selections in 2021.
Bean, from Rockwell, Texas, arrives at GW after a six-year playing career, which included stops at the University of Maryland, Lamar University, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Bean's playing career concluded in the spring with her graduate season at Maryland, where she finished with a commanding .271 AVG /.380 OBP/.511 SLG slash line as the Terps' starting catcher. A standout athletically and academically, she was named to the 2025 All-Big Ten Academic Team, and she was a B1G Sportsmanship Award Honoree.
Bean missed the 2024 season at Maryland due to injury, but she was commended for remaining active with the team in a coach-like capacity.
"I couldn't be more excited to join the GW softball staff, and I am truly grateful to Head Coach Matt Klampert for this incredible opportunity," said Bean. "I look forward to working with our team and contributing to a culture of excellence that extends far beyond the field."
In her two seasons at Lamar, Bean collected 87 hits with a .283 AVG and 32 extra-base hits. Bean's 2023 season at Lamar was highlighted by 28 walks, 21 RBI and a .932 OPS. She was named the Lamar softball newcomer of the year in 2022, before achieving Southland All-Academic First Team honors in 2023.
"Sam brings incredible experience that not many recent graduates have the opportunity to possess," Klampert remarked. "Her sideline stint while still being on the active roster at Maryland allowed her to see the game from a different viewpoint and grow her already high game IQ. I am excited to see her grow in a coaching role as she begins her journey here with the Revs."
Bean spent two seasons at UAB, the 2020 shortened COVID year and 2021, and collected 28 hits in her first full season with the Dragons. Bean was a two-time recipient of Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Medal, and she was named to the 2020 Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll while at UAB.
