Men's Basketball Breaks 3-Point Record in Road Win at Richmond
12/31/2025 7:20:00 PM | Men's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. - The operative question of rest vs. rust was posed to GW men's basketball, having played just one non-Division I opponent in the last 18 days ahead of Wednesday's A-10 opener. The answer came emphatically when the well-rested Revolutionaries bombed away early and often to win going away, 99-85, at Richmond.
George Washington broke a 24-year-old school record with 17 made 3-pointers on 33 attempts (51.5%). Tre Dinkins and Trey Autry did the heavy lifting, combining for 12 long balls with Christian Jones chipping in a trio of trifectas as well. Dinkins hit 5-of-7 from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes, including a deep shot before halftime to surge GW to a 49-38 lead.
Then it was Autry who took over with five made 3s in the second half, including a pair of four-point plays within 72 seconds midway through the stanza to balloon GW's lead to 18, 75-57. The junior set a new career-best with 24 points, making 6-of-9 3s to collab with Dinkins' 22 points (6-11 3s).
Neither, though, was GW's leading scorer. That honor belonged to A-10 Player of the Year candidate Rafael Castro, who dominated the interior and matched his career-high with 27 points on an uber-efficient 10-of-12 day from the floor and perfect 7-of-7 free throw shooting exhibition.
GW shot 58.6% overall, its best against a D-I opponent in three years, and led for all but 1:39 to snap a seven-game road losing skid against the Spiders, winning at the Robins Center for the first time since 2016. The 99 points scored were the most by a Richmond opponent at the facility since 1976.
Now 1-0 in league play for the first time since 2022-23, the Buff & Blue are back in action on Saturday for the A-10 home opener with La Salle. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m. with coverage on USA Network.
