Men's Basketball Rings In New Year at Richmond
12/30/2025 2:24:00 PM | Men's Basketball
WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball begins its 50th year of Atlantic 10 play with a dose of déjà vu as the Buff & Blue visit Richmond on New Year's Eve for the second straight season. Tip is scheduled for 4 p.m. with coverage on Monumental Sports Network and ESPN+.
FINDING HIS GROOVE
Jean Aranguren's first career points/assists double-double (7th overall) vs. St. Mary's (MD) came in his first start for the Buff & Blue and continued his recent run of strong play. Aranguren has tallied at least three assists in each of the last four games and now leads the team with 43 helpers on the season (3.3 apg), good for 11th in the A-10.
The Hofstra transfer has also found the scoring touch with double figures in three of the last four, putting up 11.3 ppg in the stretch. After entering the season as a career 43% shooter, Aranguren has shot over 50% in 10 of 13 games this year and is knocking shots down at a 54.8% clip this year.
LET US REINTRODUCE OURSELVES
Wednesday's A-10 lid-lifter marks GW's first game against a Division I foe in 18 days with just last week's matchup against Division III St. Mary's (MD) coming in between. George Washington was projected to finish fourth in the A-10, its highest preseason poll placement since prior to 2015-16.
GW is third in the A-10 in the NET (81st) after playing the sixth-toughest non-conference schedule in the league, having already competed in five Q1 + Q2 games, tied for the second-most in the loop behind VCU (6). The Buff & Blue will hit the ground running in A-10 play with three games in the first seven days featuring road trips to two historically tough places to play in Richmond (lost last 7 road games) and Dayton (lost last 11 road games).
A LOOK AT THE SPIDERS
Selected 10th in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll, Richmond has rebounded after an injury-filled 2024-25 that saw the Spiders sputter to a 10-22 (5-13) mark. UR has already matched its win total from a year ago, but has dropped two of its last three games in uncharacteristic fashion at Elon (73-70) and at home Sunday to Charleston Southern (77-72).
Depth has been a key for both sides as the Spiders feature 11 players that average between 10 and 24 minutes and eight players posting 6.0 points per game or more. Richmond is fifth nationally with 41.5 bench points per game and has put up 82.9 points per game (5th A-10) despite having just one 20-point performance all season, which came in the last game.
Leading scorer AJ Lopez, a Maine transfer, scored 22 vs. the Buccaneers on Sunday and leads the squad with 12.2 ppg. Indiana State transfer Jaden Daughtry comes off the bench to average 11.2 ppg and true freshman Aiden Argabright pours in 10.7, also having not started a game this year.
