12/12/2025 9:48:00 AM | Men's Basketball
WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball travels to Sunrise, Fla., for its fifth neutral-site game of the season as it takes on the defending national champions, #18 Florida. Tip is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on ESPN2.
A RARE RANKED OPPORTUNITY
Saturday marks GW's first matchup with a ranked foe since falling at #21/18 Dayton on Jan. 30, 2024. It's the first non-conference ranked opponent since #21 Maryland on Nov. 11, 2021. This is just the fourth ranked opponent for GW in the last seven years as the Buff & Blue are looking for the first ranked win since toppling #6 Virginia at home on Nov. 16, 2015.Â
GW is playing the defending national champion for the first time since November 30, 2002 when it battled Maryland in a neutral-site contest at what is now Capital One Arena in D.C. Florida, ranked 18th, is the highest-ranked opponent for the Buff & Blue since they took on #3 Dayton on March 7, 2020.
STRIKING A BALANCE
GW is one of three teams (Alabama, Eastern Kentucky) boasting nine players averaging at least 6.9 ppg. Impressively, all nine are doing so while playing between 16.0 and 27.0 mpg. All nine players have reached double figures at least once this season with Trey Autry becoming the sixth different leading scorer in the first 11 games on Wednesday vs. Delaware.Â
Additionally, four of the nine are averaging double figures, one off the national lead of 30 teams with five double-figure scorers. GW put seven in double digits on Nov. 12 vs. American, the first time doing so since at least 2004 and tied for the most by any team in any game across the nation this season.
A LOOK AT THE #18 GATORS
The defending national champions are 5-4 on the year, matching their loss total from a year ago, but have played the third-hardest schedule thus far per KenPom by virtue of playing #1 Arizona, #4 Duke and #5 Connecticut.
The Gators' strength has been their monster front court, leading the NCAA with 17.2 offensive boards per game and ranking second in rebounds per game (46.8), rebound margin (+14.1) and offensive rebound percentage (47.2%). Rueben Chinyelu is sixth nationally with 11.2 rpg plus 10.0 rpg. Thomas Haugh is the team's leading scorer at 18.6 rpg and 7.0 rpg and Preseason All-American Alex Condon adds 15.0 rpg and 9.0 rpg.
The one potential chink in the armor is that the Gators rank 350th nationally in 3-point percentage at 27.3%.
