Men's Basketball Hangs Tough with #18 Florida in 80-70 Setback

SUNRISE, Fla. - GW men's basketball faced its most stern challenge in over five years on Saturday afternoon, taking on the defending national champion Florida Gators in their home state. The Buff & Blue held their own aside from a critical opening stretch to start the second half, ultimately falling to the #18 team in the country, 80-70.
GW overcame some early misses to take an 18-17 lead on a slam dunk from Rafael Castro with just under eight minutes left in the first half and went into the locker room down just three, 30-27.
The first 2:30 of the second half ultimately determined the outcome as Florida scored the first 11 points to push the lead to 14 before a GW timeout. The lead swelled to as many as 20, but the Buff & Blue promptly responded with a 9-0 run to get within 11 with 10 minutes left.
But a couple rimmed-out 3s and ill-timed droughts allowed the Gators to keep GW at bay as the Buff & Blue never got closer than eight.
Trey Autry led GW in scoring for the second straight game thanks to a late barrage of triples, scoring 15 points with five rebounds. Tyrone Marshall Jr. had 14 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists while Rafael Castro (12 points) and Jean Aranguren (11) also tallied double-figure efforts.
Now comes an extended break for final exams and the holidays as George Washington will play just one game in the next 17 days before A-10 play begins on New Year's Eve in Richmond. The non-conference finale takes place against Division III St. Mary's (MD) on Monday, December 22 with tip scheduled for 12 p.m.
