WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball opens December with its lone true road game of the non-conference slate, visiting Army for an 11 a.m. tip on Tuesday on ESPN+.
CASTRO ON THE CLIMB
Rafael Castro showcased his A-10 Player of the Year capability in the Cayman Islands Classic, posting a pair of 20-point efforts, a double-double and averaging 19.3 ppg and 7.0 rpg en route to being named to the All-Tournament team. Castro has reached double figures in seven consecutive games with three 20-point efforts and two double-doubles sprinkled in.
Since being held to seven points in the season opener vs. Maine, Castro is averaging 17.1 ppg, 8.4 rpg, 2.0 apg and 1.3 spg while shooting 63.7% from the field. The senior has been incredibly efficient when on the court as he is one of just two players nationally (Isaac Johnson, Hawaii) putting up at least 15.5 ppg and 7.5 rpg while playing less than 22.0 mpg.
JOHNSON SHINING IN RETURN TO COURT
Garrett Johnson made his official return to the court on Nov. 12 vs. American, appearing for the first time since Feb. 13, 2024. He has made up for lost time by jumping in as GW's second-leading scorer, averaging 15.5 ppg and shooting 45.5% from deep.
In the Cayman Islands Classic opener vs. McNeese, Johnson set a new career-high with 26 points off the bench, making 7-of-10 shots overall and 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. It marked the fourth time in Johnson's career that he's hit five 3-pointers in a game as he has hit multiple 3s in 19 of his 28 career appearances.
A LOOK AT THE BLACK KNIGHTS
Army enters play at 3-6 on the young season fresh off back-to-back wins at Fairleigh Dickinson (81-73) and in overtime at home vs. Manhattan (81-78). The Black Knights are retooling after losing three of their top four scorers from a year ago with the primary catalyst this year being Ryan Curry at 13.4 ppg. Jacen Holloway (10.3 ppg) and Jackson Furman (10.2) also average double digits.
Army relies heavily on the 3-point shot, ranking fourth nationally with 54% of their shot attempts coming from beyond the arc and more than 41% of their points coming from deep. In last season's meeting, GW held Army to 5-of-30 shooting from deep with Curry accounting for three of the makes on 11 attempts.
