WEST POINT, N.Y. - GW men's basketball scraped out a hard-fought victory over Army West Point on Tuesday morning, 84-70, improving to 7-2 on the year.
Playing in front of a near-empty gym following a school day cancellation due to inclement weather, the Buff & Blue battled a pesky Army squad that bombarded the nets from beyond the arc to the tune of 16-of-39 (41.0%) from deep. GW had entered the game allowing foes to make just 29% so far this year.
Nevertheless, the Revolutionaries kept the Black Knights at arms length for the final 30 minutes, finally taking their first double-digit lead on a Rafael Castro dunk with 12 minutes remaining. Army was back within eight with less than four left, but Ty Bevins and Christian Jones provided dagger triples for enough cushion to get the win home.
GW also took advantage of a parade to the free throw line, making 27-of-32 freebies compared to 4-of-6 for Army.
Castro led all scorers with 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting, adding seven rebounds. Jones and Garrett Johnson scored 14 points each and Luke Hunger gave GW four in double digits with 11 points and seven boards.
Next up for George Washington is the Smith Center 50th Anniversary celebration on Saturday presented by Vanda Pharmaceuticals. Tip-off with William & Mary is set for 6 p.m. with a special halftime ceremony honoring the #33 jersey of Yinka Dare, who will be inducted into the GW Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday.
