WASHINGTON - A party 50 years in the making comes to the Charles E. Smith Center on Saturday night as GW men's basketball welcomes William & Mary for a 6 p.m. tip. The #Smith50 celebration presented by Vanda Pharmaceuticals features a replica giveaway of the Charles E. Smith Center for the first 500 fans through the gates on Saturday.
HOME SWEET HOME
GW owns a 483-219 (.688) all-time record in the facility with tonight's game being the 703rd contested in its history. A win on Saturday night would be the seventh home win in a row dating back to last year and extend GW's non-conference home winning streak to 23 games in a row going back to December 2022.
A collection of the Top 50 moments in Smith Center history was unveiled with the top 3 spots all involving men's basketball:
#3 - Shawnta Rogers Buzzer Beater over Xavier in 1999
#2 - Carl Elliott Tip-In to complete 26-1 season in 2006
#1 - TBD at 12 p.m. Friday
HONORING YINKA DARE
Saturday marks the second of four men's basketball jersey dedications this anniversary season as Yinka Dare's #33 will be posthumously honored in a halftime ceremony.
Dare, who was inducted into the GW Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, played two seasons in Foggy Bottom from 1992-94, leading the program to the 1993 Sweet 16 before becoming the 14th overall pick in the 1994 NBA Draft. Dare still owns the program's all-time record in blocks per game and he was named 1993 A-10 Rookie and Newcomer of the Year as well as a two-time All-Atlantic 10 Second Team honoree.
A LOOK AT THE TRIBE
William & Mary (8-2) is off to its best start since the 2009-10 season, having won six non-conference games in a row for the first time since that same campaign. The Tribe are coming off an 83-79 win over Duquesne on Tuesday and pushed Richmond to the limit in a 90-86 loss on Nov. 11.
W&M owns the fastest tempo in the country, averaging 75.3 possessions per game with an average offensive possession length of just 13.5 seconds. The Tribe average 86.0 ppg, shoot 50% from the field and dish out 19.6 assists per game, all nationally ranked in the top 65. Defensively, W&M is top-50 nationally in turnovers forced per game (17th), 3-point defense (20th) and steals per game (44th).
