WASHINGTON - Fresh off a 40-point trouncing of American on Wednesday, GW men's basketball continues its three-game homestand on Saturday night when it welcomes ODU to the Smith Center. Tip is scheduled for 6 p.m. with live coverage on ESPN+.
HONORING JOE HOLUP
HONORING JOE HOLUP
As part of the Smith Center 50th Anniversary season, Saturday marks the first of four men's basketball jersey recognitions this season with the honoring of Joe Holup's #16 during a halftime ceremony.
A GW Hall of Famer, Holup scored 2,226 points and accumulated 2,030 rebounds in his GW career from 1952-1956, becoming one of just two players in NCAA history with 2,000 career points and 2,000 career rebounds (La Salle's Tom Gola). He was a four-time All-Southern Conference honoree and a third team AP All-American as a senior before becoming the highest draft choice in program history when he was picked fifth by the Syracuse Nationals (now Philadelphia 76ers) in 1956.
Holup still holds the GW career records in scoring average (21.4), made field goals (756), rebounds, and rebounding average (19.5), and his 2,226 career points are the second-most in program history.
OFFENSE IS HUMMING
GW's 107 points on Wednesday vs. American were the most for the program in regulation since putting up 108 vs. Maine in 2013. The Buff & Blue have put up 50 or more points in three-consecutive halves for the first time since at least 2000, and have shot at least 50% in four of the six halves this season.
GW's balance was once again on display with seven players reaching double figures, the first time accomplishing that feat since at least 2004 and tied for the most by any team in any game across the nation this season. The Revolutionaries are second in the A-10 in scoring at 91.0 ppg and rank 32nd nationally in field goal percentage (52.0) and 39th in effective field goal percentage (59.5).
A LOOK AT THE MONARCHS
Old Dominion is 2-1 on the young season following home wins over Non-DI Randolph (93-53) and Norfolk State (60-57). Under the guidance of second-year head coach Mike Jones, ODU was projected to finish fifth in the Sun Belt this season following a 15-20 campaign a year ago.
The Monarchs possess the Sun Belt's Preseason Player of the Year in Robert Davis Jr., who scored eight points in last year's meeting. Davis missed the season opener and has scored two points in two games so far this season.
A pair of transfers - LJ Thomas (Austin Peay) and KC Shaw (Maryland Eastern Shore) - currently pace the Monarchs with 16.3 points per game. Jordan Battle, a third team preseason All-Sun Belt pick, averages 9.7 ppg and 5.7 rpg in his first year with ODU after transferring from Coastal Carolina.
