WASHINGTON - On the night that George Washington celebrated one of its all-time greats, it also dismissed the Monarchs from D.C. A halftime celebration of Joe Holup's #16 gave way to a second-half rout as GW cruised to a runaway 96-73 win.
Once again showing its extraordinary depth, while All-A-10 big man Rafael Castro led the way, a different player shines every game. Against Old Dominion it was Hofstra transfer Jean Aranguren who enjoyed a breakout performance in Buff & Blue, with a season-best effort in a near-perfect night with 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor and nary a turnover.
Old Dominion hung around in the first half and held a late six-point lead in the opening stanza at 36-30, but the rest of the way saw a 66-37 finish for George Washington.
Castro finished with a game-high 20 points on just six field goals attempts - all successful - to go along with his game-high nine rebounds and three steals. Castro and Aranguren led a transfer party that saw all five of GW's double-digit scorers, along with Garrett Johnson (Princeton), Bubu Benjamin (Tarleton State) and Tyrone Marshall Jr. (Western Kentucky) prove that the grass is greener in Foggy Bottom.
The Revolutionaries' 90-point night in its third-consecutive contest was a first since 2000.
Now 4-0 on the season, GW concludes a three-game homestand Wednesday night vs. UMBC at 7 p.m. The team then heads to the Cayman Islands to play a trio of perennial mid-major teams to reckon with in McNeese, Middle Tennessee and Murray State.
