WASHINGTON - George Washington men's basketball entered play Wednesday night with a perfect record and that unblemished mark was never in doubt in an 89-52 mollywhopping of UMBC. GW raced out of the gates and enjoyed a 33-point cushion in the first half before settling on a 30-point edge at intermission.
That made the final 20 minutes largely a moot point, though the Revolutionaries did extend the lead to 39-point margin before game's end.
Ten players logged at least 10:45 of court time and the bench outscored the starters, 40-25, with GW featuring depth that goes nine-deep with quality starting time in their collegiate careers.
Garrett Johnson led the five players in scoring on a night when the team connected at a .540 clip as a team (.481 from three-point range) and enjoyed an 18-to-11 assist to turnover ratio, paced by Jean Aranguren's six dimes against just one miscue.
The A-10's reigning Co-Player of the Week Rafael Castro did as he pleased with 13 points and a monster game-high 15 rebounds, with Foggy Bottom's Twin Towers of Castro and Luke Hunger both double-doubling. The Northwestern-transfer, Hunger, went for 13 and 10, with GW out rebounding its guests, 43-29.
Though UMBC had battled Dayton to within six earlier this season, the terrain ahead gets more challenging as George Washington now embarks on a multi-team event that will see it play McNeese, Middle Tennessee and Murray State on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday in George Town, Grand Cayman. Tipoff with the Cowboys on Sunday is scheduled for 5 p.m. with live coverage on FloCollege.
