Men’s Basketball Starts American’s Bus Early in Runaway 107-67 win

WASHINGTON - The American Eagles migrated to Foggy Bottom Wednesday night with a young and rebuilding team after graduating the majority of its Patriot League-winning NCAA Tournament team from a season ago.
An older, bigger and more-experienced George Washington outfit took no mercy, as three games into the young season it continues to show that the offseason hype wasn't just ballyhoo.
Stars were aplenty at the Smith Center in the return of Garrett Johnson to regular season action after missing the last season and a half with multiple setbacks. The Oakton, Va., product wasted no time, eagerly hoisting 13 shots in 19:19 of court time, playing with a grateful spirit to be doing again what he missed so much. Johnson's three 3-pointers in seven attempts were part of GW's 15 made triples on the night, in a scorching .536 effort from long range.
It was Duquesne transfer and preseason All A-10 Second Team pick Tre Dinkins who did most of the damage from behind the arc, as his nine field goal attempts were all from the land of plenty. He drained a career-high 7-of-9 threes en route to his game-high 23 points as he led the team in scoring for the second-straight game.
On a team that entered play with seven players averaging double figures in scoring, it figured that a lucky seven would find their way with 10 points or more in GW's highest scoring regulation game since 2013.
The biggest margin of a victory against a Division I opponent in two years, and largest ever over the visitors from Tenleytown, also allowed walk-ons Mohamed Binzagr and Amir Arrington to check in late. Nine different players logged at least 10 minutes for GW, with the bench outscoring the starters 54-53 behind Dinkins and Johnson's stellar shooting.
Christian Jones enjoyed a perfect night from the floor and the line, making all four field goal attempts, including a pair of threes, and both free throws. The sophomore All A-10 Teamer also had a game-high five assists.
GW now welcomes in Old Dominion Saturday at 6 p.m. with a special halftime recognition to honor GW Hall of Famer Joe Holup's #16.
