GW Excels over Eastern Michigan and Oakland in Day 1 of EMU Tournament

Ypsilanti, Mich., -Â GW volleyball claimed two thrilling victories over Oakland and host Eastern Michigan to open the EMU Tournament on Friday. The 2024 squad now sits at 4-1 on the young season.Â
BY THE NUMBERS
Game 1 vs. Oakland
Leading the offensive charge in game one was first-year Taylor Treahy, registering 12 kills, with senior Salem Yohannes following closely behind at 11. Defensively, Cianna Tejada and Kelsey Watkins championed the defense, registering a collective 10 blocks.Â
Game 2 vs. Eastern Michigan
Treahy and Yohannes remained dominant in the second match, tallying 16 and 19 kills, respectively. MC Daubendiek tallied three service aces in the second match, while Dilara ElmacıoÄźlu fed the attack with 34 assists.Â
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
Game 1 vs. Oakland
In the first stanza of the day, GW emerged dominant on offense, tallying 14 kills. A service ace from Amina Robinson sealed the set in favor of the Revolutionaries, 25-21.Â
In the second, early kills from Treahy and Daubendiek put the GW Revs at an advantage over the Grizzlies. Oakland battled back from the early lead, and with two lead changes and six tied scores, the Revolutionaries earned the second set, 25-22.Â
In set three, the Revolutionaries earned an early 6-1 lead over Oakland, forcing a timeout. GW secured the swift 3-0 victory over the Grizzlies behind an impressive .448 hitting percentage and 15 kills.Â
Game 2 vs. Eastern Michigan
In the opening sequence of the match, GW and EMU traded points to begin the set, but the Eagles gained momentum to take a six-point lead and win the first.Â
In set two, points were once again traded between the two squads. The Eagles went on two rallies late in the set, but their efforts were stopped with a 26-24 set victory for GW off a kill from Tejada.Â
The third set opened as the Eagles went on a five-point run to claim a quick 6-1 lead. The home team did not surrender their lead in the third, pushing EMU to a nine-point victory.Â
In the fourth, GW battled back to claim an early lead over Eastern Michigan. Kills from Daubendiek and Yohannes earned a five-point lead for GW, forcing a timeout from the Eagles' bench. The momentum continued to shift in GW's favor, leading to a swift 25-17 victory and forcing a fifth set of action.Â
In the fifth and final set, Daubendiek opened with a kill for the GW Revs, but the set remained tied for the majority of the shortened set. GW eventually pulled ahead, and a thrilling kill from Yohannes led the Revolutionaries to their 15-13 victory.Â
