WASHINGTON -Â GW golf has added Toks Pedro as the program's new assistant coach, it was announced on Wednesday.
"I'm thrilled to have Toks join our coaching staff," said Head Coach Chuck Scheinost. "He is a tremendous player who has broken barriers as the first ever Nigerian golfer to qualify for the US Amateur Championship and earn status on any of the PGA Tour affiliate tours, averaging 72.3 in 2019 during his first year on PGA Tour China. He has also won seven times as a professional. His experiences will be invaluable to our program as we look to build upon our success over the past few years."
Pedro has been a professional since 2018, joining the APGA tour as a full-time member in 2022 and posting six top-10 finishes in 10 events, including three top-3 finishes and a victory at TPC Sugarloaf. His career began by earning stats on the PGA Tour China in 2019 and winning five times on the Moonlight Tour from 2020-21.Â
"I am very excited and grateful to be part of the GW team," Pedro said. "This university has always held a special place in my heart with members of my family having previously attended GW. I am looking forward to making a positive imprint on the golf team and the university as a whole."
Pedro had a standout amateur career as well, beginning with his undergraduate career at Rutgers, where he was a three-time Preseason All-Big Ten selection and two-time Big Ten All-Academic honoree while serving as team captain for the Scarlet Knights.
Originally from Nigeria, Pedro attended Hilton Head Preparatory School in Hilton Head, S.C., before heading to Rutgers. He has twice won an individual bronze medal for his country and won the Veritas World Junior representing Nigeria in 2013. He became the first Nigerian to ever qualify for the US Amateur in 2018 and was the Medalist at the Washington Metropolitan Amateur Championship the same year.
