Volleyball Sweeps Duquesne, Earning First A-10 Victory of 2024

Pittsburgh, Pa. – In thrilling fashion, the GW volleyball team bounced back from Friday's game and earned its first A-10 victory of the 2024 campaign on Saturday afternoon by defeating Duquesne, 25-20, 25-12, 25-21. With the win, GW now moves to 10-4 in 2024 and 42-22 all-time against the Dukes.
BY THE NUMBERS
First-year Taylor Treahy led the GW offense with 12 kills and swinging with a .500 hitting percentage. Following closely behind was senior Salem Yohannes, emerging once again as an offensive force to fuel the Revolutionaries with 11 kills and eight digs. Amina Robinson led the squad in digs (12), while juniors Sydney Stewart and Cianna Tejada created a wall at the net with two blocks apiece. As a team, the GW Revs out-swung the Dukes .314 to .112 to earn the matinee victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The matchup proved to be tight once again, but the Revolutionaries emerged victorious in the first. With several ties in the early going of the match, back-to-back kills from Sydney Stewart and Salem Yohannes brought GW out to a four-point lead. Despite the Dukes tying the score at 16 apiece, GW pulled ahead, forcing the Dukes to call a timeout. GW continued to pull ahead, and a kill from Haylee Brown sealed the first set in favor of the visiting team, 25-20.
In the second, GW opened up dominant, climbing out to an early 8-4 lead over Duquesne. The Dukes responded, but Penelope Heipler's performance behind the service line pushed GW to a 15-8 lead, and swiftly claimed the second, 25-12, off a service ace from Yohannes.
The third featured six tie scores, but the Revolutionaries did not let the opposition slow their momentum. In seal the win, Treahy chipped in a service ace to secure match victory for GW, 25-21.
UP NEXT
GW will now return to the Charles E. Smith Center to open A-10 play at home. The Revolutionaries will welcome Fordham on Friday, October 4 for a 6 p.m. matchup. The contest will also be streamed on ESPN+.
