George Washington volleyball had its first of three matches this week on Tuesday evening against the University of Virginia, which ended in a four-set loss by the Buff and Blue (23-25, 25-13, 17-25, 21-25).
The first set was a back-and-forth power play between the GW Revs and the Cavaliers. Each team brought force to the net but the Cavaliers took the set 25-23. During the second set, the Buff and Blue came out strong with 14 kills in 27 attacks to give them a .444 hitting percentage. This, coupled with the 16 digs and strategic defense, led to the second-set win by George Washington. Â
To enter the third set, the Buff and Blue were off to a slower start with only 10 kills compared to the Cavaliers 14 kills. George Washington struggled defensively as well, with only four digs and one block in the third. This led to a dropped set by the GW Revs and an increase in tension ahead of the fourth and final set.Â
In the final set of the Tuesday night contest, the two teams went point-for-point all the way to the end. George Washington fought hard to regroup on defense and secured 13 digs and three blocks, but it wasn't enough to change the match outcome.
The team was led by Cayla Cogan with 14 kills and just four errors out of her 31 attempts. On offense, Alexis Badu followed closely behind with 10 kills, 19 attempts and a .421 hitting percentage.Â
UP NEXT: The Buff and Blue will travel three miles northwest to take on Georgetown on Friday, Sept. 18 at 6:00 p.m.. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
