TOWNSVILLE, Australia – Following a stellar three-year career with the Buff & Blue, Nya Lok has landed a professional contract with the Townsville Fire of the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) in Australia.
"Nya is an exciting prospect," said Fire head coach Shannon Seebohm during the team's announcement of her signing. "She's coming off a successful college career and has improved each season since heading to the U.S. She's an excellent 3-point shooter and a standout wing defender, utilizing her length and physicality effectively. I'm thrilled to welcome her to the Fire and look forward to seeing her continue to develop in our program."
Lok, who grew up in Melbourne following her parent's escape to a refugee camp in Ethiopia, returns home to continue her basketball journey which began in the junior college ranks at Midland College in 2019. Lok competed in 45 games for the Chaps, making 34 starts. She averaged 10.3 ppg across two seasons, shooting the ball at a 44.4% clip and pulling down 7.2 rpg in her sophomore season.
Her steady growth in two seasons at Midland caught the eye of Caroline McCombs and GW Women's Basketball, bringing her onboard prior to the 2021-22 season as a junior transfer. In three seasons with GW, Lok was a consistent presence in the Buff & Blue lineup, appearing in 74 games and making 43 starts. Lok's scoring average in Foggy Bottom continued to rise during her GW career, culminating in a 10.0 ppg average during her graduate season in 2023-24. During that same year, Lok reached the 1,000-point milestone for her career, doing so on January 27 at Fordham.
Not only was Lok a leader on the court at GW, she continues to be a leader in life outside of basketball. She's made a significant impact in the community by creating an initiative called PlayOn, which works to give children in underprivileged communities, specifically children in South Sudan, resources and opportunities to participate in sports and gain access to the gear and equipment needed to be successful.
Lok joins a Townsville Fire squad that won the WNBL title during the 2022-23 season and lost in the league semifinals last year. The club has won four league championships, all in the past 10 seasons. Lok joins a talented list of signees joining the Fire this season which include Jacy Sheldon, the WNBA's fifth overall pick in 2024.
The 2024-25 WNBL season is set to kick off in November. The Fire are set to announce their regular season schedule soon.
