Baseball Beats Coppin State, Earns 20th Win of 2024

The Revolutionaries opened the scoring in the first, erupting for four runs in the home half of the inning. Jude Clough got things started with an RBI groundout and was followed up by Brett Young, who singled up the middle to score Schwartz and Robbie Lavey. Young would ultimately be GW's final run of the inning, stealing third then coming around to score on an errant throw from Coppin State's catcher. Despite the early lead, Coppin State had an immediate answer in the second, putting up four runs of their own off GW starter Max Haug. Haug would ultimately toss two innings in the appearance, striking out one batter and giving up the four earned runs.
In the third, GW got back on the scoreboard with two more runs to recapture the lead. Schwartz ripped an RBI triple into the right center gap, outracing the throw to third from the Eagles' centerfielder. Later in the inning, McGwire Tuffy added to the lead with an RBI groundout, scoring Schwartz from third base.
The back-and-forth action continued in the fourth when Coppin State took its first lead of the game. The Eagles plated three runs off reliver Cade Davis to lead capture the 7-6 advantage. However, it would GW the rest of the way, putting up six unanswered runs in the final four innings of action. The Buff & Blue tallied two runs in the fifth, then followed it up with two more runs in the seventh. In the fifth, Steve DiTomaso tallied his lone RBI of the day when he reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded. Later in the inning, Young scored on a wild pitch, his second and final run of the day. In the seventh, Schwartz kicked things off with a solo home run to right field, his second of the season. Later in the inning, Charlie Rogan singled up the middle, scoring DiTomaso from second. The Revolutionaries got two more runs in the eighth inning when Schwartz tallied two more RBI off a single up the middle, capping off his stellar day.
Cade Davis picked up the win for GW, moving him to 2-2 on the season after he tossed three innings in relief. Davis tallied three of GW's nine strikeouts as a team. Gavin Miller earned the save for the Revolutionaries, tossing 1.2 innings and only allowing one hit to close out the game. The save is Miller's first of the year. Coppin State starter Giovanni Canales was charged with the loss, dropping him to 0-1 in 2024.
Offensively, GW was paced by Gates and Schwartz, who put together stand-out efforts. Gates went 4-for-4 from the dish, tallying two runs scored and drawing one walk. Schwartz finished 3-for-4 from the plate, recording four RBI and three runs score. He also drew one walk on the day as well. Young went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Lavey and Clough finished with two runs each as well.
The Revolutionaries continue A-10 action this weekend, opening a three-game series at Richmond on Friday. First pitch from Pitt Field is slated for 2:00 p.m. The series extends into Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. matchup and Sunday for a 12:00 p.m. clash. All three games will be featured on ESPN+.
