Nowakowski Breaks Program Record in 15-14 OT Win Over VCU

WASHINGTON - Emma Nowakowski's eighth goal of the day 49 seconds into overtime sent GW lacrosse to an exhilarating 15-14 victory over VCU, giving the Buff & Blue their first conference win of the season.
Nowakowski's marker not only lifted GW to the triumph, but it also broke the program record of seven goals that was previously held by Laura Hostetler and Rachel Mia (twice). The High Point transfer scored six of her eight goals after halftime, and six of the seven goals for the Revolutionaries after the break.
GW raced out to an early lead on the crisp Saturday afternoon, building an 8-4 advantage early in the second quarter. Desiree Kleberg led the early onslaught with a hat trick in the opening 17 minutes.
VCU fought its way back into the game, evening the match at eight with four unanswered goals before halftime. But GW never let the Rams take the lead, with Nowakowski potting a pair in the first five minutes of the third quarter to reclaim a 10-8 cushion.
VCU ultimately tied the game at 12, and then again at 13, and finally at 14 with a free position shot in the final 15 seconds after it appeared Nowakowski had given GW the win with her seventh goal of the day with 1:41 remaining.
Facing sudden victory in OT, GW won the opening draw, went right down the field and set the stage for Nowakowski to fight her way inside and score the winner.
Phoebe Mullarkey posted a hat trick of her own to augment the scoring effort, matching the efforts of Kleberg. The incredibly even contest saw VCU hold a slight 29-28 edge in shots, but GW got eight saves from Arden Bogle in net compared to four stops from a trio of VCU goaltenders.
GW will now hit the road for its next two matches, visiting Richmond next Saturday for a 1 p.m. opening draw on ESPN+.
