WASHINGTON – Coming on the heels of a thrilling 15-14 overtime victory over VCU last weekend, the George Washington lacrosse team travels to Richmond for a 1:00 p.m. matchup on Saturday afternoon. Fans can catch live coverage of the contest on ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT
Led by Emma Nowakowski's eight goals, GW captured a 15-14 overtime victory over VCU last Saturday at the GW Lacrosse Field. Nowakowski tallied her eighth goal 49 seconds into overtime, lifting GW to the win and setting the program record in the process. The program's previous record for goals in a single game was seven, set by Laura Hostetler and Rachel Mia (twice). Nowakowski recorded six of her eight scores after the break, accounting for all but one of GW's second-half goals.
GW raced out to an early lead on the crisp Saturday afternoon, building an 8-4 advantage early in the second quarter. Desiree Kleberg led the early onslaught with a hat trick in the opening 17 minutes. VCU fought its way back into the game, evening the match at eight with four unanswered goals before halftime. But GW never let the Rams take the lead, with Nowakowski potting a pair in the first five minutes of the third quarter to reclaim a 10-8 cushion. VCU ultimately tied the game at 12, and then again at 13, and finally at 14 with a free position shot in the final 15 seconds after it appeared Nowakowski had given GW the win with her seventh goal of the day with 1:41 remaining. Facing sudden victory in OT, GW won the opening draw, went right down the field and set the stage for Nowakowski to fight her way inside and score the winner.
NOWAKOWSKI WINS A-10 ACCOLADE
Following her stellar performance against VCU, Nowakowski was named the A-10 Offensive Player of the Week. Her eight goals are the most by an Atlantic 10 player this season and tied for the fourth-most in the country this year. Coupled with her two assists, she provided 10 points on the day, matching the most by anyone in the conference this season and ranking t-10 nationally.
The High Point transfer is now second in the A-10, and 29th nationally, with 42 goals on the season while ranking sixth in points, and 76th nationally, with 48. Her offensive outburst moved her up to eighth all-time at GW in single-season goals, just 12 shy of tying that program record with three games remaining in the regular season.
SCOUTING THE SPIDERS
The Spiders enter the weekend 10-3 overall and a perfect 6-0 in conference play. Richmond bounced back from an 18-12 loss against James Madison to defeat La Salle 17-5 last Saturday. The Spiders' three losses this season have come against nationally ranked opponents. #17 Navy, #13 Virginia and #11 James Madison have all gotten the best of Richmond this season. Richmond is led by head coach Anne Harrington, who's in her third season with the program. She has an outstanding mark of 41-11 with the Spiders.
On the field, Richmond is led by Colleen Quinn who has 36 goals and 20 assists on the season. Quinn has taken 72 shots in 2024 and has also recorded 12 draw controls. Alexis Morton is also enjoying a solid season with 27 goals and a team-high 23 assists. Her 50 points are second-most on the team, while she also has nine ground balls. Richmond's top defender is Maggie Jordan with 15 caused turnovers on the season. She also has 33 draw controls and eight ground balls. Grace Mildoon has a team-best 36 draw controls, while also adding 18 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers.
