RICHMOND, Va. – Despite a strong start, the George Washington lacrosse team couldn't maintain its high-caliber offense, falling 16-7 to Richmond on Saturday afternoon.
The Revolutionaries led the contest 2-1 after the first quarter courtesy of goals from Grace Curry and Everly Kessler. Richmond, one of the top teams in the nation, quickly tied the game up at three with 4:24 left in the second quarter. Despite the Spiders holding the momentum, Kesseler tallied her second goal of the day with 1:28 left in the first half to give GW a 4-3 lead at the break.
Out of halftime, Desiree Kleberg recorded GW's fifth goal of the game, pushing the Buff & Blue lead to 5-3 with 11:43 remaining in the third. From that point on, Richmond wouldn't be denied. The Spiders ripped off eight-straight goals over a 13-minute span to take a commanding 11-5 lead. Kleberg and Kesseler managed to tally one more goal each in the remaining minutes, but it wasn't enough as Richmond coasted to a 16-7 win.
Kesseler led GW with her three-goal contest. Kleberg finished with two goals on the day, while Curry and Emma Nowakowski each finished with a goal apiece. Arden Bogle finished with 14 saves for GW as well.
The Revolutionaries return to action next Saturday for the final road game of the regular season. Gametime is set for 3:00 p.m. in Amherst, Mass.
