Bishop Reaches 2,000 Career Points in Setback at Saint Louis
2/24/2024 6:33:00 PM | Men's Basketball
ST. LOUIS - James Bishop IV set a new season-high with 34 points, including the 2,000th point of his Buff & Blue career, but GW men's basketball couldn't stop Saint Louis in a 96-91 loss on Saturday afternoon at Chaifetz Arena.
Bishop became the third player in program history to reach 2,000 points on a 3-pointer as time expired at the end of the first half, giving him 18 points before intermission. He joins all-time leading scorer Chris Monroe (2,248 points) and Joe Holup (2,226) in the 2,000-point club in Foggy Bottom.
Similar to Wednesday at Saint Joseph's, Bishop attempted to will his team to victory, but the Buff & Blue were unable to find enough stops to secure the win. Saint Louis was a preposterous 12-of-19 from beyond the arc in the opening 20 minutes, at one point making nine in a row to build a 55-42 advantage at intermission.
GW quickly cut the deficit to single digits three minutes into the second half, but was unable to get closer than six until a pair of Bishop free throws with 7:55 remaining made it a five-point affair. A layup on the other end for Saint Louis pushed the lead to seven and marked the last made field goal of the game for the Billikens with 7:42 remaining. SLU scored its final 17 points at the charity stripe.
The Buff & Blue found itself down 11 with 3:40 remaining, but went on a 10-1 run over the next three minutes to cut the lead down to two, 87-85, with 40 seconds left following a Bishop layup. The Revolutionaries never got the chance to tie the game, though, as SLU went 9-for-10 at the line the rest of the way to ice the game.
Bishop played all but 38 seconds and finished with 34 points on 11-of-20 shooting, including a career-high seven 3-pointers, six assists, five rebounds and three steals. Jacoi Hutchinson reset his career-high with 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting, adding seven boards and four helpers. Maximus Edwards scored 19 points with five rebounds.
After making 12 3s in the opening half, SLU made just one in the second half, but ultimately shot 13-of-26 from beyond the arc and 27-of-33 at the free throw line. Gibson Jimerson led six Billikens in double figures with 19 points.
GW will now return to the Smith Center for its penultimate home game of the season as it hosts Massachusetts on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. The Buff & Blue will look to exact revenge following an 81-67 setback to the Minutemen in Amherst last month.
