WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball is set for its second road game of the week, and final road tilt in non-conference action, taking on Old Dominion on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
ASCENDING FLOOR GENERAL
Jacoi Hutchinson reset his career-high for the third time already this year with his first career 20-point game Wednesday at American. Hutchinson tallied 20 points to go along with a career-high seven rebounds, five assists and season-best four steals, just the sixth game of 20/7/5/4 in the country this season.
The Laurel, Md., native is now ninth in the A-10 with 3.8 assists per game and has registered multiple assists in every start. He also ranks sixth in the A-10 with 1.9 steals per game and is one of just four players in the league to be among the top 10 in both.
SWIPER KEEP SWIPING
The Revolutionaries are tops in the A-10, and 40th nationally, with 9.3 swipes per contest. GW's steal rate is 27th in the NCAA, taking the ball away on 13.2% of opponent's possessions. GW has recorded at least eight steals in eight of the nine games, including three games with double-digit thefts and a season-high 14 on Wednesday at American, the most for the Revolutionaries since Jan. 13, 2021 vs. VCU.
Individually, Darren Buchanan Jr., Christian Jones, Rafael Castro and Jacoi Hutchinson have double-digit steals and rank in the top-15 in the A-10 in steals per game. As a result, GW ranks fifth in the A-10 with 14.1 turnovers forced per game and is fourth in turnover margin at +2.1.
HISTORY VS. OLD DOMINION
GW and Old Dominion begin a home-and-home series with a Saturday afternoon tilt in Norfolk. GW leads the all-time series 8-6, but the two sides have not met since the end of an eight-year series from 1997-2003.
ODU won the last two matchups in December of 2002 and 2003, including the last meeting on Dec. 20, 2003 in Norfolk, 72-62. GW is looking for its first win over the Monarchs since Dec. 5, 2001, also a road win, and for its fourth win in Norfolk overall.
Trey Moss is the lone Revolutionary with prior experience against the Monarchs, scoring 20 points with seven rebounds last season for William & Mary in a win over ODU.
The Buff & Blue are also looking to improve to 2-0 vs. the Sun Belt after defeating Louisiana, 82-72, in the Virgin Islands last month.
A LOOK AT THE MONARCHS
Old Dominion is in its first season under Head Coach Mike Jones, who has DMV ties as the longtime head coach at DeMatha Catholic before serving as an assistant at Virginia Tech and Maryland.
The Monarchs struggled out of the gate with three-straight losses to start the year and an 0-3 showing in the Cayman Islands before arguably their best effort of the year on Monday in a win over William & Mary.
Devin Ceaser leads a trio of Monarchs that average double figures with 13.2 ppg despite coming off the bench in every game. Sean Durugordon and UMass transfer RJ Davis both pour in 12.8 ppg and shoot 36% and 34%, respectively, from beyond the arc.
The Monarchs are top-100 in the country in offensive rebounding rate, grabbing 34% of their own misses, and rank 28th nationally with 57% of their offense coming from inside the arc.
