NORFOLK, Va. - So far through the first month of the 2024-25 campaign, GW men's basketball has made one thing for certain: there's always a second-half run. Saturday in Norfolk was no exception as the Revolutionaries finally wrestled control with eight minutes remaining via a 12-1 burst and fended off an Old Dominion charge to win, 78-70.
GW trailed by one at the break, 35-34, but came out with a flurry via a pair of 3-pointers from Gerald Drumgoole Jr. to quickly retake the lead. It was Drumgoole that sparked the 12-1 run with another 3-pointer later in the half and Darren Buchanan Jr. provided the exclamation mark with a breakaway slam to give the GW Revs a 71-58 cushion with 5:50 left.
The Buff & Blue didn't make a field goal the rest of the game, but hit enough free throws, including five from Drumgoole in the game's final minute to secure the team's first non-conference road win in eight years.
Drumgoole scored 16 points on a highly efficient 3-of-4 shooting day from beyond the arc and 5-of-6 free throws, but the story came from GW's bench where the Revolutionaries scored a season-high 34 points. Christian Jones paced the reserves with a career-high 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting to go along with three rebounds and an assist.
Sean Hansen notched his first double-digit effort for GW with 10 points and seven rebounds and Trey Autry contributed seven off the pine as well. Buchanan gave GW four in double figures with 13 points, six rebounds and three assists.
The Revolutionaries shot 60% after halftime (15-of-25) and finished at 48% for the day, once again parading to the free throw line by connecting on 23-of-37 freebies.
GW will return home for the Holidays and the remainder of its non-conference schedule with three-straight games at the Smith Center. The Buff & Blue return to Foggy Bottom on Friday to take on Army West Point at 7 p.m. tip.
Fans can partake in the free pregame party on the G Street plaza from 5-7 p.m. Additionally, the brand new "Friday Night Flights" ticket package, in coordination with DC Brau, is available for purchase featuring a ticket to the game plus six tokens to redeem for food or beer samples. All for just $40!
